About the position

The Senior Communications and Development Manager is a skilled writer, editor, and facilitative leader who will help the Hive Fund communicate about its work and the work of its grantee partners to bring more funding and attention to climate, racial, and gender justice progress in the US South. The Manager will be responsible for managing the Hive Fund's brand and promoting its thought leadership externally across multiple channels. The manager will also help Hive Fund program and fundraising staff synthesize stories and data into newsletters, annual reports, grant reports and proposals, and other products. The ideal candidate is someone for whom writing comes easily; is skilled at managing complex, multi-party editing processes; has the expertise to weave and translate both qualitative and quantitative impacts of grantee partners' work into compelling narratives that inspire funders to move money in new ways; and has some basic web and graphic design skills and sensibilities. We seek candidates who have experience communicating with both nuance and clarity about complex climate solutions and who are inclusive bridge-builders with an understanding of both funder audiences and grassroots climate justice movements in the US South. The position reports to Co-Directors, and also supports and collaborates with the Strategic Partnerships Director (SPD).

Responsibilities

  • Manage and produce content for the Hive Fund's core communications channels, including LinkedIn, website, and email communications, including a quarterly newsletter.
  • Lead the production of an annual Impact Report and other external-facing materials.
  • Support the Co-Directors' thought leadership through strategic writing and speaking opportunities.
  • Stay up to date and monitor media coverage around core issues, grantee partner impact, and philanthropy.
  • Help staff produce quarterly Learning Labs to share insights, ideas, challenges, and learnings from our grantee and funder communities.
  • Select and manage consultants including graphic designers, data visualization specialists, video producers, photographers, and others as needed.
  • Maintain the Hive Fund's email list and support its integration with the fundraising CRM.
  • Manage the Hive Fund's brand, including visual identity, messaging, voice, and written style.
  • Partner with the SPD to develop tailored funder-facing materials including tailored memos, webinars, regular soft touches.
  • Draft and edit grant reports and edit grant proposals.
  • Help with special events such as funder site visits, webinars, and other priority Hive Fund events.
  • Sit in on program team meetings to learn about our grantmaking.
  • With Co-Directors, SPD, and program staff, contribute to gathering, synthesizing, writing, and disseminating data, stories, and other evidence of grantee partners' impact and identifying useful metrics of progress.
  • Help staff write semi-annual grant docket memos and maintain strategy documents.
  • Help coach staff on writing as needed.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of communications experience with increasing responsibility, including experience in climate non-profit and/or foundation landscapes.
  • Facilitative leadership skills with ability to manage projects in ways that include team members.
  • Effective oral, visual, and written communications skills across a variety of platforms, with ability to tell compelling stories and convey complex, intersectional work in clear and inspiring ways.
  • Skill in writing about climate justice and social change issues. Experience writing grant reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate quantitative and qualitative data into high-level insights and persuasive narratives about impact.
  • Excellent editing skills, including managing multiple rounds of editing across multiple staff.
  • Comfort using Adobe Suite, Canva and other tools for basic design work/edits.
  • Experience supervising and/or working with consultants.
  • Highly collaborative work style with outstanding relationship-building skills, experience contributing to a positive organizational culture, and the ability to operate as a thought partner to the co-directors, staff, and grantee partners, funding partners, and external constituents with the highest levels of grace and integrity.
  • Deep knowledge and/or lived experience of climate, racial, and gender equity issues and movements in the US South.
  • Ability to learn new areas and approaches quickly and pull in outside expertise as needed.
  • Experience working with a CRM system.
