About the position

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a Sr. Communications Designer - UI/UX/Accessibility who will report to the Program Manager, Digital UX/UI Design. This role focuses on improving how individuals who use assistive technology interact with digital experiences. The candidate will advocate for accessibility, coach others, and solve problems to enhance the accessibility needs of users relying on MD Anderson's services and resources. The position involves supporting various organizational projects and collaborating closely with teams in Strategic Communications, Marketing, and Information Services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular accessibility audits of institutional websites and web applications.
  • Conduct accessibility evaluations for websites and applications under consideration for purchase and deployment, including reviewing vendor-provided VPAT responses.
  • Implement accessibility features for web applications and software using knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Evaluate the accessibility of external platforms that host institutional content.
  • Troubleshoot, evaluate, and recommend assistive software and hardware.
  • Participate in the review and maintenance of guidelines, best practices, and standards related to accessible web design and IT software systems in compliance with Texas Administrative Code (TAC) 213 and federal ADA regulations.
  • Develop accessible templates and tools for web production in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Identify, implement, and oversee tools for monitoring website accessibility.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of outreach and training on accessibility topics for various audiences.
  • Train campus community members on using accessibility monitoring software and assist in identifying strategies for web accessibility.
  • Collaborate with designers to integrate accessibility considerations into design processes from the outset.
  • Provide actionable feedback on prototypes and mockups to ensure they meet accessibility standards.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in graphic design or related field.
  • Five years of experience in graphic design, public relations, communications, writing/editing, or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPACC certification (Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies).
  • Expertise in accessibility, web design, and ADA compliance.
  • Strong understanding of ADA requirements in graphic design and related fields.
  • Experience in UI/UX design for websites.
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS.
