About the position

The Senior Communications Manager is a pivotal leader responsible for the strategic communications, marketing, and branding initiatives that support the transformative goals of the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland. This role is essential in enhancing the visibility and reputation of the Institute, the School of Public Policy, and the University within the realms of nonprofits, philanthropy, social impact, and civic engagement. The Senior Communications Manager will spearhead strategic projects and programming that promote the Institute's objectives across various platforms, including the Do Good Campus and the Do Good Lab, which focuses on research, as well as the Nonprofit Leadership Executive Education and Training programs. In this capacity, the Senior Communications Manager will oversee the communications team, ensuring effective budget management and the successful collaboration with several critical consultants and contractors. This position requires a leader who can not only manage and mentor team members but also cultivate and maintain important partnerships both on and off campus. The role demands exceptional organizational and project management skills to juggle multiple deadlines, projects, and relationships while maintaining a high standard of communication and branding. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in communications and marketing, with a proven track record of leading initiatives for large, multifaceted organizations. They will be adept at writing and editing for various media, including web and print, and will have experience with digital media management, social media platforms, and email marketing systems. The Senior Communications Manager will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of the Do Good Institute and enhancing its impact in the community and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic communications, marketing, and branding initiatives for the Do Good Institute.
  • Oversee the communications team and manage the budget effectively.
  • Develop and implement projects and programming that align with the Institute's goals.
  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships and relationships on and off campus.
  • Manage, mentor, and support the development of team members and oversee contractors and vendors.
  • Ensure the success of communications efforts across various platforms, including the Do Good Campus and Do Good Lab.
  • Demonstrate excellence in project management, ensuring multiple deadlines and details are met.
  • Produce high-quality written content for web and print communications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, higher education, nonprofit, public, social sector(s) or other relevant fields.
  • Two years of direct supervisory experience.
  • 7+ years of relevant professional work experience in communications, marketing, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead communications and branding for a large organization.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to expanding multicultural knowledge and skills.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Superb writing and copy editing skills, with knowledge of AP Style preferred.

Nice-to-haves
