About the position

The Senior Construction Controller will play a pivotal role in overseeing the financial operations of one of the largest divisions within a leading multi-location construction firm. This position is crucial for ensuring that all financial aspects of construction projects are managed effectively, which includes accurate financial reporting, stringent cost control, and adherence to regulatory standards. The Senior Controller will work closely with project managers, senior leadership, and the finance team to provide strategic financial insights that support the overall objectives of the organization. In this role, the Senior Construction Controller will be responsible for the preparation and review of financial statements, reports, and budgets specifically tailored for construction projects. Monitoring project costs and expenditures will be a key responsibility, ensuring that financial performance aligns with established budgets and forecasts. The controller will conduct thorough financial analyses to identify cost-saving opportunities, thereby supporting informed decision-making processes. Compliance is another critical aspect of this role, as the Senior Controller will ensure that all financial operations adhere to relevant regulations, company policies, and accounting standards. The development and implementation of internal controls will be necessary to safeguard the company’s assets and maintain financial integrity. Additionally, the Senior Controller will manage, mentor, and support Assistant Controllers and Project Accountants, fostering a collaborative and high-performing finance team. Coordination with project managers and other departments will be essential to ensure financial alignment and transparency across the organization. The Senior Controller will also contribute to the development of long-term financial strategies and plans, positioning the company for sustained growth and success in the construction industry.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, reports, and budgets for construction projects.
  • Monitor project costs, expenditures, and financial performance to ensure alignment with budgets and forecasts.
  • Conduct financial analysis to identify cost-saving opportunities and support decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, company policies, and accounting standards.
  • Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and financial integrity as needed.
  • Manage, mentor, and support Assistant Controllers and Project Accountants.
  • Coordinate with project managers and other departments to ensure financial alignment and transparency.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term financial strategies and plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in construction accounting with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction accounting and financial principles.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
