About the position

The Senior Automation Engineer position at Wunderlich-Malec in Wilmington, MA, is a leadership role focused on implementing automation solutions using PLC, DCS, HMI, and SCADA platforms. The role requires strong technical proficiency, project management skills, and the ability to interact directly with customers to identify requirements and develop specifications. The engineer will lead a team in delivering innovative automation solutions, ensuring project profitability, and securing repeat business with clients.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver innovative automation solutions and design standards either self-directed or as a leader of a team.
  • Conceptualize, detail, and implement control systems for industrial processes and machinery that meet customer requirements.
  • Develop control system architecture, select components, detail schematic diagrams, and create system documentation.
  • Program controllers (PLC, DCS, RTU) and process visualization (HMI/SCADA).
  • Develop databases for archiving/displaying historical system data and implement/commission the control system at the client's facility.
  • Design, detail, and implement fiber, wired, and wireless systems using industrial protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.).
  • Develop project execution plans, work breakdown structures, and associated budgets.
  • Prioritize and schedule tasks, track time, and report on project status.
  • Oversee daily operations and activities of projects up to $1M, ensuring overall profitability.
  • Act as technical lead on projects and guide lower-level engineers and technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Greater than 10 years of experience in automation engineering.
  • In-depth understanding of PLC hardware/software platforms such as Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Modicon.
  • In-depth understanding of HMI/SCADA hardware/software platforms such as GE iFIX, Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View, and Inductive Automation's Ignition.
  • In-depth understanding of DCS hardware/software platforms such as Emerson DeltaV and Rockwell PlantPAx.
  • Familiarity with electrical schematics, including power distribution under 480VAC, control panels, and associated NEC references.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is desired.
  • Experience leading a team of engineers/technicians to provide control system solutions.
  • Proven experience in managing, leading, and guiding automation design and implementation projects in the Life Science industry.
  • Strong knowledge of S88 Batch and familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements of the life science industry such as cGMP, 21 CFR Part 11.
  • Familiarity with GAMP5, System and Software Development Life Cycles methodologies, and validation.
  • Strong knowledge of IT/OT networking and extensive knowledge of automation protocols such as HART, Foundation Fieldbus, and Modbus TCP/IP.
  • Experience with relational databases such as SQL and Oracle.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
