About the position

As a Senior Cryogenic Mechanical Engineer at Microsoft, you will be part of a pioneering team that is at the forefront of Quantum Computing technology. Your responsibilities will include the design, development, and maintenance of cryogenic equipment, ensuring that these systems perform reliably and efficiently. You will also be tasked with improving and upgrading existing cryogenic systems, preparing detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings, and creating bills of material for both custom and non-standard cryogenic products. Prototyping and conducting thorough analyses to support your designs will be a critical part of your role, allowing you to innovate and enhance the capabilities of cryogenic technologies. Responsibilities

  • The design, development, and maintenance of Cryogenic Equipment.
  • Improving and upgrading existing Cryogenic Equipment.
  • Ensure performance and reliability of Cryogenic Equipment.
  • Preparing 3D CAD, 2D drawings and bills of material for custom cryogenic products and non-standard cryogenic products.
  • Perform all necessary prototyping and analysis to support your designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 6+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 4+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in industry or in a research and development environment, could include completion of a post-doctoral research position OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in hands-on systems experience and expertise in design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and operating of 4K and mK cryogenic refrigerators.
  • 3D CAD experience, specifically with Creo and/or SolidWorks.
  • Experience in designing for manufacturability, and installing ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Engineering project management and best practices.
  • Analytical problem solving and system troubleshooting best practices.
  • Analytical techniques including root cause analysis, basic structural, thermal, stress, machine design.
  • Familiarity with liquefier design, maintenance, and operation.
  • Experience with dilution refrigerator design, maintenance, and operation.
  • Knowledge of COMSOL/Ansys.
  • Experience with helium leak checking and debugging.
  • Familiarity with residual gas analyzers.
  • Experience with vacuum pump carts with molecular turbo.
  • Knowledge of transfer dewars.
  • Proficiency with general machine shop tools (Mill, Lathe, Hand tools, etc.).
