About the position

The Senior Customer and Application Development Engineer for Coatings at ExxonMobil plays a crucial role in growing the ProxximaTM polyolefin thermoset system business. This position involves providing technical support to customers, optimizing their processes, and leading application development projects. The engineer will work closely with commercial colleagues and travel as needed to support customer trials, demonstrating the advantages of ProxximaTM resins over existing thermoset products.

Responsibilities

• Provide on-site technical support for customers producing non-reinforced molded goods using reaction injection molding (RIM)
• Assist customers in optimizing and troubleshooting their processes to run ProxximaTM resins and provide guidance on equipment upgrades
• Lead application development projects utilizing RIM equipment located in Baytown facilities
• Run equipment to produce samples needed for projects and customer sampling
• Provide technical insights from the market to guide new application developments
• Develop novel technology to strengthen the portfolio of intellectual property
• Author technical reports and publications to share learnings
• Co-author promotional brochures and technical data sheets highlighting performance benefits
• Train and mentor less experienced colleagues

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Coatings Science, Polymer Science, Materials Science or related degree
• 10 years of industrial experience formulating high-performance thermoset coatings
• Strong interpersonal, analytical and communication skills
• Proficient in use of computers with excellent administrative and organizational skills
• Good team player and self-motivated
• Hands-on with inclination to be lab-based
• Knowledgeable of Intellectual property development/assessment/procurement

Nice-to-haves

• Expert understanding in thermoset coating chemistries (epoxy, urethane, urea, siloxane, radiation curing, etc.)
• Expert understanding in coating formulation principles, additives, colorants, adhesion promoters, anti-corrosion pigments, and inorganic fillers
• Knowledge of coating application methods (airless spray, plural component spray, brushing, roller, etc.)
• Understanding of polymer structure-property-processing relationship
• Knowledge of ASTM, ISO, AMPP coating test methods
• Knowledge of statistical experimental design (DOE) and formulation optimization
• Knowledge of major thermoset coating markets and applications
• Experience with hybrid coatings of mixed chemistries, polymeric blends, IPN
• Knowledge of ROMP and p-DCPD chemistry
