About the position

The Senior DAQ Hardware Electronic Design Technician at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining beamline electrical systems, including motion control and specialized sample environments. This role requires a highly skilled technician to support networking and computing infrastructure for beamlines while collaborating with various technical groups and external scientific users.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of complex drawings and assembly/test instructions for electrical and electronic systems.
  • Provide expert-level technical guidance to staff during the fabrication of assemblies for instrument control systems.
  • Oversee procurement and manage inventory of critical assemblies, components, and cables.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and mentor team members in diagnostic techniques.
  • Lead the assembly and design of prototype platforms and test stands.
  • Support routine maintenance procedures and new instrument installations.
  • Ensure compliance with work control and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Provide high-level operational support for Instrument Data Acquisition and Controls systems.

Requirements

  • AS degree in electronics or related field with 7 or more years of proven experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expertise in preparing layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Proficient in interpreting manufacturer data sheets and technical documents.
  • Skilled in creating, interpreting, and following test procedures.
  • Working knowledge of various types of test equipment such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Creo, or SolidWorks.
  • Experience with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with motion control, PID control, ladder logic.
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and Linux Operating Systems.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLCs, Galil and Parker controllers.
  • Basic soldering skills.
  • Experience working at a National Laboratory or a scientific research facility.
