About the position

The Senior Data Analyst position at the Bureau of Vital Statistics involves conducting statistical analyses of vital event data, leading research projects, and providing analytical support to various stakeholders. The role is crucial for ensuring accurate reporting and analysis of vital statistics data, which is essential for public health initiatives in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct statistical analyses of birth, death, and other vital event data using standard analytical tools.
  • Serve as the research and analytics lead for the Statistical Analysis and Reporting Unit.
  • Lead planning and implementation of analyses in line with fiscal year goals and future research agendas.
  • Provide methodological and analytical assistance to staff regarding advanced statistical methods.
  • Assist with surveillance, programmatic, and research projects, offering consultation and data access.
  • Produce Annual Summary of Vital Statistics data tables and figures in collaboration with other analysts.
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on analyses, reports, and peer-reviewed papers.
  • Supervise student workers on research projects to advance analytic priorities.
  • Represent the division, bureau, and office in agency initiatives as needed.

Requirements

  • A master's degree or doctorate in public health, epidemiology, statistics, health economics, or data science.
  • Extensive experience using SAS and R, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with vital statistics data and knowledge of statistical and mathematical methods.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on data analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience presenting results to expert audiences at conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Knowledge of electronic death and birth registration systems and the ICD coding system.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with SQL or Python programming languages.
  • Experience in demography.
