About the position

The Senior Data Architect is a pivotal role within the Data Strategy & Enterprise Architecture organization at Great American Insurance Group. This position is designed to partner with various stakeholders to define and operationalize the data domain strategy, roadmap, and best practices, ensuring alignment with the Reference Architecture and the overarching business strategy. The Senior Data Architect will focus on creating business value through effective data management and architecture. This role requires collaboration with Data and IT functional leaders, subject matter experts (SMEs), and other architectural roles to construct and manage data operating models that support business initiatives. In this role, the Senior Data Architect will be responsible for representing the interests of the data organization to peers in Enterprise Architecture, adhering to industry and internal best practices. The architect will also stay abreast of emerging trends in data and recommend their implementation to address complex business challenges, ultimately delivering insights more rapidly. The position demands a strong partnership with various programs and projects to understand data dependencies, anticipate risks, and identify opportunities for improvement. The Senior Data Architect will lead efforts to ensure that data capabilities operate efficiently, accurately, and with high quality. This includes developing an integrated view of data capabilities and processes using a cohesive framework and industry best practices. The architect will facilitate the definition and publication of data standards, best practices, and roadmaps, ensuring synchronization with the overall enterprise architecture. Additionally, the role involves co-developing a data life cycle governance framework, which includes standards, patterns, and controls to manage data effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Provide partnership, domain expertise, direction, and accountability for strategic architecture plans, system design, and implementation standards for the data domain.
  • Lead efforts to ensure data capabilities are operating efficiently, accurately, and with high quality.
  • Collaborate with programs & projects to understand data dependencies, anticipate risks, and identify opportunities.
  • Guide data project decisions based on the direction of the data domain roadmap.
  • Contribute data domain expertise to feasibility and complexity assessments of potential future initiatives.
  • Develop an integrated view of data capabilities and processes using a repeatable approach and industry best practices.
  • Provide consulting and recommendations for data transformation initiatives and maturing existing data capabilities.
  • Facilitate the process of defining and publishing data standards, best practices, and data roadmaps.
  • Collaborate in the creation of conceptual and logical architecture and models to inform physical design of data-related projects.
  • Co-develop data life cycle governance framework including standards, patterns, and controls.

Requirements

  • Minimum eight years of relevant experience as a data architect or data engineer building large-scale data solutions.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience in architecting and large data modernization, data migration, and data warehousing, particularly with cloud-based data platforms like Snowflake.
  • Experience with defining and operationalizing data strategy, data governance, data lineage, and quality standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of data engineering, data integration, and data management concepts (i.e., APIs, ETL, MDM, CRUD, Pub/Sub, etc.).
  • Experience with data modeling and structured/hierarchical datasets (i.e., JSON, XML, etc.).
  • Engineering experience with large scale system integration and analytics projects.
  • Property & Casualty domain experience is a plus.
