About the position

The Senior Data Center Technician (SDCT) plays a crucial role in the operations of Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) by managing the preparation, installation, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of IT equipment in data centers. This position requires a deep understanding of network and server equipment interactions, and the technician will also provide guidance to other technicians while suggesting improvements to processes for enhanced service quality and efficiency. The role supports a vast infrastructure that powers Microsoft's online services, ensuring optimal performance and reliability for millions of users worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates understanding of standard processes for preparing, installing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and decommissioning IT datacenter technologies.
  • Reviews Process Change Notifications (PCNs) and understands their impact on work execution.
  • Complies with Data Center policies and escalates compliance issues to management.
  • Completes assigned tickets efficiently and assists less experienced technicians with complex tasks.
  • Develops execution strategies for assigned tasks and performs basic startups and shutdowns for hardware.
  • Performs diagnostics and troubleshooting to identify technical issues and replace faulty components.
  • Communicates and escalates technical or safety incidents to management.
  • Directly performs decommissions and simple changes to infrastructure equipment.
  • Maintains awareness of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for personal performance discussions.
  • Completes required training and observes experienced technicians for on-the-job training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent with basic knowledge of computer hardware and 1+ years of experience supporting IT equipment.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft security screening requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree in Computer Science or related field and/or equivalent work experience with 3+ years of experience supporting IT equipment.
  • 2+ years experience in a production, mission-critical 24x7x365 datacenter environment.
  • Experience handling AI GPU equipment (H100, A100 or equivalent).
