About the position

As a Senior Data Engineer in the Applied Analytics & Insights (AA&I) team at General Motors, you will be instrumental in developing consumer-centric, prescriptive solutions that support GM's transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This role involves working within the AA&I Analytics Engineering hub to create high-quality, scalable data products that enhance the Decision Science and Data Science portfolios. These portfolios cater to various business lines, including Loyalty, OnStar, Digital Services & Experience, and Growth Businesses. You will collaborate with fellow data engineers and cross-functional teams to establish a robust data engineering foundation that drives innovation and efficiency. Your primary responsibilities will include building industrialized data assets and optimizing data pipelines to support Business Intelligence and Advanced Analytics objectives. You will work closely with Data Scientists, BI Developers, System Architects, and Data Architects to deliver value aligned with GM's vision for the future. This position requires a proactive approach to staying updated with emerging trends and technologies in Data Engineering, identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation within the organization. Additionally, you will foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing within the team and the broader data engineering community.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Decision Science and Data Science Innovation Hub to develop data products for applied analytics solutions, focusing on Customer Experience use cases.
  • Design and develop data products compliant with data privacy and security policies to protect sensitive customer data.
  • Drive the adoption of cloud-first technologies and industry-standard Data Engineering practices to enhance engineering capabilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including data governance, data architecture, release management, Data Ops & ML Ops, and infrastructure as required.
  • Stay updated with emerging trends and technologies in Data Engineering and proactively seek opportunities for improvement and innovation.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and development within the team and the broader data engineering community.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience delivering enterprise-scale data and analytics solutions using modern hybrid cloud technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with practical experience analyzing and curating large scale customer event data products from disparate data sources.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry-standard Data Engineering practices including data privacy & security, ETL/ELT, data architecture, data quality assurance, performance optimization, source code management, and release management.
  • Expert programming skills in data and analytics platforms, big data processing frameworks, and languages including Azure, Databricks, Spark, Python, SQL, and GitHub.
  • Effective communication and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
