About the position

The Senior Data Engineer at Northwestern Medicine plays a crucial role in driving strategy and decision-making by uncovering insights from data. This position involves working cross-functionally to leverage data assets, ensuring that the organization's data warehouse and analytic solutions are effectively utilized to support healthcare transformation. The role requires a deep understanding of data integration, ETL processes, and collaboration with various teams to enhance the organization's data capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver data warehouse and analytic solutions by ingesting, integrating, and curating data.
  • Synthesize raw data into actionable information for analytical solutions.
  • Apply advanced SQL knowledge to create complex queries and stored procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Architecture team in designing and executing solutions.
  • Ensure data models and databases align with approved architecture standards.
  • Document and communicate the integration approach of all solution components.
  • Research and propose solution alternatives to meet business needs.
  • Gather and scope requirements from business users and recommend analytical solutions.
  • Assist with ETL design and development, including data analysis and quality profiling.
  • Evaluate data quality and interpret results clearly.
  • Document programming changes and system modifications.
  • Own projects and collaborate with the business to exceed customer expectations.
  • Mentor staff and provide training on analytics tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • 7+ years of experience in querying, analyzing data, and/or data modeling/architecture.
  • 4+ years in enterprise, application, technical, or information architecture design.
  • 4+ years developing and maintaining ETL/data pipelines (e.g., Microsoft SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Databricks).
  • Strong technical knowledge of application delivery methods and system portfolios.
  • Demonstrated results managing/influencing virtual teams and serving as a mentor.
  • Knowledge in domain-specific areas such as coding languages (C, C++, JAVA, .NET, C#), networking, and applications like Cerner, Epic, Peoplesoft, Kronos.
  • Experience in a matrixed organization.
  • Expertise in design methodologies and business functions.
  • Working knowledge of Unified Modeling Language (UML) or other architecture modeling notations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience developing, designing, and supporting applications and relational databases.
  • Experience using statistical analysis software (R, Python, etc.).
  • Previous experience with Epic Clarity data.
  • Previous healthcare experience, ideally with a health system.
