About the position

Walmart Global Technology is seeking a Senior Taxonomist who is not only detail-oriented but also possesses a strong background in structured data, classification, and metadata models. This role is pivotal in enhancing the Global Catalog Team's extensive product taxonomy, which is among the largest in the world. The team comprises top-tier data scientists, engineers, and product managers dedicated to creating a next-generation global product taxonomy that meets the diverse needs of Walmart's vast customer base. In this position, you will assist in the taxonomy and categorization build-out efforts, which includes the development, deployment, and maintenance of taxonomies. You will be responsible for creating metadata for a wide range of products, from soccer cleats to boat cleats, and bed sheets to dryer sheets. A key part of your role will involve explaining your classification decisions to external stakeholders, ensuring clarity and understanding of the taxonomy's structure and purpose. You will interact closely with internal stakeholders, including product managers and research specialists, to ensure that the taxonomies being developed align with end-user needs. As a power user of our internally developed tools, you will accelerate the development of structured data efforts. Your understanding of how classification varies within and between languages will be crucial in this role. Additionally, you will serve as a proactive feedback loop to the research and product teams, contributing to the improvement of internal taxonomical structures and machine learning models, as well as the processes used to build and maintain our taxonomies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with taxonomy and categorization build-out efforts, including development, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Create metadata for various products and explain classification decisions to external stakeholders.
  • Interact with internal stakeholders to ensure taxonomies meet end-user needs.
  • Become a power user of internally developed tools to enhance structured data efforts.
  • Understand classification differences within one language and between others.
  • Provide feedback to research and product teams to improve taxonomical structures and processes.

Requirements

  • Mastery of taxonomy and metadata best practices is mandatory.
  • Intermediate to expert level of Microsoft Excel.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and structured thinker.
  • Experience leading independent projects.
  • Ability to break down different concepts into schemas fit for purpose.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and represent taxonomy to external groups.
  • Strong teamwork, verbal, and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • A degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent is a plus.
  • Experience creating, implementing, and maintaining taxonomies or similar structured data.
  • Fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
  • Knowledge of agile workflows (JIRA, Scrum) is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of retail assortment is a plus.
  • A sense of humor is appreciated.
