About the position

The Senior Data Governance Engineer at General Motors is responsible for facilitating and influencing data governance processes across various data and analytics teams. This role focuses on defining and building data products as corporate assets within the enterprise data mesh ecosystem. The engineer will set requirements and govern the execution of metadata management, data cataloguing, data lineage, and data stewardship outcomes, while also participating cross-functionally to promote data governance tools and platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework, including policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Collaborate with Data Domains to define and enforce data quality standards, data classification, access management, and metadata management.
  • Work closely with IT teams to implement data governance tools and platforms.
  • Conduct data risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies for data security and compliance.
  • Execute test validations to ensure security measures protect sensitive data and comply with regulations.
  • Measure the effectiveness of data governance initiatives using metrics and KPIs.
  • Provide training and support to business users and data stewards on data governance principles and tools.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and identify opportunities for improvement in data governance.
  • Facilitate data governance committees and foster engagement in data governance strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years of experience implementing data governance, policies, standards, and solutions
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements associated with data management and data privacy
  • Strong aptitude for learning new tools and processes relevant to analysis and governance
  • Experience working with large databases and data management
  • Experience creating and delivering training content to stakeholders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex data governance concepts
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • 7 years' experience in enterprise organizations with analytics or data management roles
  • 3+ years' experience leading analytics or governance teams
  • Proficient with data governance tools like Atlan, Immuta, or Collibra
  • Proficient with Databricks, Azure services, or AWS tools
  • Experience providing visualization of data lineage and definitions
  • Proficiency with analytical or data integration tools such as Python, R, Tableau, and Power BI
  • Experience with data management operations or data architecture design
  • Experience with statistical modeling or machine learning techniques
  • Relevant certifications like CDMP or CDGP.
