About the position

The Wall Street Journal's Data Team is looking for a creative data journalist who specializes in causal inference and has a strong background in economics, political science, or quantitative social sciences. The role focuses on leveraging data to uncover causal relationships and explain real-world phenomena, collaborating with journalists to develop data-driven stories, and ensuring statistical rigor in the newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement statistical and causal inference models to analyze and interpret complex datasets.
  • Collaborate with journalists to uncover data-driven stories.
  • Conduct rigorous methodology assessments to determine the validity and reliability of data.
  • Evangelize statistical rigor across the newsroom.
  • Balance theoretical knowledge with practical application and communicate findings clearly to non-technical audiences.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of post-graduate experience in data science.
  • An MS with research experience or PhD in data science, statistics, economics, quantitative social sciences, or a related field, or equivalent documented experience.
  • Strong theoretical foundation in statistical modeling or causal inference.
  • Proficiency in statistical software and programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL).
  • Experience with advanced statistical techniques such as regression analysis, machine learning, and causal modeling.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think critically and creatively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in data journalism or working with media organizations is a plus.
  • Familiarity with modern data visualization tools.
