About the position

Circle is a financial technology company at the forefront of the emerging internet of money, where value can travel globally, nearly instantly, and at a lower cost than traditional settlement systems. This innovative infrastructure, including USDC, a blockchain-based dollar, empowers businesses, institutions, and developers to leverage these advancements, marking a significant shift in the evolution of money and technology. As the first Data Science hire focusing on Machine Learning at Circle, you will tackle critical challenges such as identifying illicit transactions and actors, and optimizing reserve balances across accounts to mitigate systemic risk. These responsibilities are essential to maintaining our reputation as a safe and compliant entity in the crypto space. Your role will also involve conducting research, visualizing data, and exploring various aspects of our business to enhance understanding and performance. In this position, you will own the development, improvement, and maintenance of models aimed at detecting suspicious activities and managing reserves effectively. Collaboration with product teams, treasury, fellow data scientists, and data engineers will be crucial as you work to produce model inputs, build models with appropriate fidelity and frequency, and ensure their successful deployment and monitoring. Additionally, you will identify and address other machine learning challenges that can add significant value to Circle. When not focused on machine learning, you will define metrics, analyze data needs for business partners, and maintain data pipelines and models that support dashboards and data products. Your analyses will provide insights into customer behavior, influencing product decisions and strategies. You will also be responsible for communicating findings and recommendations to a broad audience, including senior leadership, and analyzing blockchain activity to understand trading dynamics and the role of USDC in the crypto ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Own development, improvement, and maintenance of models for identifying illicit transactions and managing reserves.
  • Collaborate with product, treasury, data scientists, and data engineering teams to understand problems and produce model inputs.
  • Build machine learning models with appropriate fidelity and frequency, ensuring successful deployment and monitoring.
  • Identify and work on additional machine learning problems that provide value to Circle.
  • Define metrics and analyze data needs for business partners.
  • Initiate, develop, and maintain data pipelines and models for dashboards and data products.
  • Perform deep analyses to understand customer behavior and extract insights for product decisions.
  • Communicate business states, experiment results, and recommendations to a broad team and senior leadership.
  • Analyze blockchain activity to understand trading dynamics and the role of USDC in the crypto ecosystem.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in data analysis or data science, with 3+ years focusing on machine learning problems, ideally in KYC, sanctions detection, anti-fraud detection, treasury management, or crypto/blockchain data science.
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (R or Python) for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of machine learning theory and application.
  • Proven experience in planning and driving productionalized machine learning models.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex findings to both technical and non-technical partners.
