About the position

The Senior Data Scientist at United Airlines plays a crucial role in enhancing the MileagePlus loyalty program through advanced data science techniques. This position involves leveraging extensive member data to identify opportunities for program improvement and innovative product development. The Senior Data Scientist will lead by example, guiding other team members in producing impactful business outcomes through data-driven solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior data science efforts for United's loyalty program, MileagePlus.
  • Communicate on business challenges and opportunities.
  • Provide insight into current data assets.
  • Educate collaborators on opportunities to model insights.
  • Experiment with models to address business problems, testing and validating them.
  • Refine existing models based on new data resources or changing business environments.
  • Express data science project outputs in an understandable format for non-technical staff.
  • Innovate on critical metrics and provide expert consulting to business partners.
  • Troubleshoot data challenges with technology managers.
  • Develop strong presentation visuals for easy absorption of results.
  • Mentor team members and provide recommendations.
  • Document successes and failures to build long-term knowledge.
  • Influence decision-makers towards a data-centric view of problem-solving.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a quantitative field (statistics, engineering, analytics, information systems, aviation management, or related degree).
  • 4+ years of core data science experience with a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or 2+ years with a master's degree, or a Ph.D. in a relevant field.
  • Experience working with large datasets for statistical analysis (supervised or unsupervised learning).
  • Experience with database interface tools and statistical programming languages such as SQL, Python, SAS.
  • Proficiency in Python for data manipulation, cleaning, model training, and evaluation.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or Business Analytics.
  • 1+ additional years of experience in the travel industry, marketing/loyalty studies, or ad tech.
  • Experience with Reinforcement Learning models.
  • Experience with Causal Inference.
  • Experience training and deploying models (with AWS).
  • Experience with Pyspark.
  • Experience presenting findings to business management.
  • Experience mentoring on methods for development and evaluation of statistical models.
  • Experience with Tableau, Spotfire, Power BI, or other visualization tools.
