About the position

The Senior Database Administrator at Northwestern Medicine is responsible for maintaining and optimizing the organization's database systems to ensure high availability, data integrity, and performance. This role involves leadership in implementing RDBMS architecture, conducting regular database reviews, and collaborating with various teams to support the organization's IT infrastructure. The position requires strong technical skills, effective communication, and strategic planning to meet user needs and enhance system capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for implementation of RDBMS architecture for high availability, disaster recovery, and test systems utilizing best practices in the industry.
  • Maintains databases in areas such as space management and object necessary to ensure optimum database performance and data integrity.
  • Conducts regular database, file structure & security reviews to ensure compliance with policies and identify areas of improvement.
  • Reports findings & recommendations to Database Manager and leadership.
  • Completes management approved documentation for planned tests, implementations, upgrades & conversions.
  • Monitors databases regularly, particularly space utilization, and performs timely backups/restores and re-indexing.
  • Monitors and completes regular performance maintenance tasks, data integrity checks, and performance tuning.
  • Exhibits strong oral & written communication skills to interact with team members, management, users & vendors.
  • Communicates status on project implementations & problem resolutions to IS staff and users.
  • Documents policies, procedures, standards & methodologies for database maintenance.
  • Assists Database Manager in developing logical project plans and resource estimates.
  • Participates as an active member of project teams and assists in identifying new application/database products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, Relevant IT Certifications
  • 7+ years of experience in database administration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in core discipline in the healthcare industry.
