About the position

The Senior Database Administrator/Systems Analyst at Xavier University of Louisiana serves as the technical lead in managing and advising on database technologies to support the university's faculty, staff, and students. This role requires expertise in Oracle and MSSQL databases, as well as experience in enterprise systems like Ellucian/Banner. The position involves ensuring database performance, integrity, and security while providing support during software implementations and upgrades.

Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, configuration, maintenance, backup and recovery, monitoring and availability of all database instances, systems, and applications as needed
  • Ensure performance, integrity, and security of database instances
  • Provide database support to university personnel during all phases of software implementation and/or upgrades to the database environments
  • Work to support and maintain Oracle database environments
  • Maintain personal knowledge and professional expertise consistent with current database trends
  • Collaborate with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures
  • Install and configure relevant network components to ensure database access as well as database security, consistency, and integrity
  • Respond to and resolve database access, security, and performance issues
  • Monitor database system details, including stored procedures and query execution time, and implement index tuning and efficiency improvements
  • Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving
  • Monitor, optimize and allocate physical data storage for databases
  • Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems
  • Help deploy data services in the cloud as necessary
  • Troubleshoot data migrations as needed
  • Translate file-based data models into effective relational database schemas
  • Design and implement efficient software applications for database access
  • Establish appropriate end-user database access control levels
  • Develop routines for end-users to facilitate best practices database use

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field
  • Eight to Ten years of experience working/administering enterprise level databases like Oracle and MSSQL, and Enterprise Systems such as Ellucian / Banner, Appworx, and Xtender
  • Experience in managing multiple database environments and acting as a technical lead in enterprise-level database administration and/or design
  • Higher Ed or Public sector experience working in a senior database administration environment
  • Proficiency in systems design, applications development and programming and scripting
  • Ability to program in system support tasks in C, C++, Java, Perl, batch, Power/Shell, or other general-purpose programming languages
  • Perform complex performance analysis including databases and system processes as needed

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science information technology, computer science or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of SQL databases; such as Oracle, MS-SQL, MySQL
  • Knowledge of Operating Systems; such as Windows 2016, Windows 2012, Red Hat Linux, Ubuntu Linux
  • Understanding of core enterprise services; Active Directory, DNS
