About the position

As a Senior Database Administrator with Top Secret Clearance, you will play a crucial role in supporting a Department of Justice program that designs, builds, and implements advanced data collection systems. This position is ideal for a mid to senior level Database Administrator located near Stafford, VA, who is looking to join an established team with opportunities for growth. You will be responsible for architecting, implementing, and administering globally distributed SQL Server instances, ensuring high availability through clustering and disaster recovery strategies. Your expertise will be essential in analyzing large, complex systems to identify performance bottlenecks, application bugs, and areas for efficiency improvement. In this role, you will optimize SQL Server to handle large data volumes and high throughput processing, capturing and analyzing database activity to enhance indexing, file structure, and maintenance processes. You will conduct database architecture assessments to evaluate the Database Management System (DBMS) and its configuration and performance. Identifying areas of instability and deviations from best practices will be part of your responsibilities, as will participating in performance, load, and stress testing, and remediating any issues that arise. Additionally, you will lead the implementation of security hardening and auditing across all SQL Server instances within the enterprise. Developing scripts to automate SQL tasks will be a key part of your duties, and you will participate in all aspects of the application lifecycle, including requirements analysis, system design, implementation, testing, development, and sustainment. Preparing technical designs and documentation, such as knowledgebase articles for use by the help desk, will also be part of your role. Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement and administer globally distributed SQL Server instances using clustering and DR/COOP for high availability.
  • Analyze large, complex systems to determine performance bottlenecks, application bugs, and opportunities to improve efficiency.
  • Optimize SQL Server to accommodate large data volumes and high throughput processing.
  • Capture and analyze database activity to identify improvements in indexing, file structure, and maintenance processes.
  • Plan and conduct database architecture assessments that examine the DBMS and database configuration and performance.
  • Identify areas of instability and deviations from best practices with database components.
  • Participate in performance, load and stress testing, and remediation of issues identified.
  • Lead the implementation of security hardening and auditing of all SQL server instances across the enterprise.
  • Develop scripts to automate SQL tasks as needed.
  • Participate in all aspects of the application lifecycle, e.g., requirements analysis and definition, system design, implementation, testing, development, and sustainment.
  • Prepare technical designs and documentation (i.e., knowledgebase articles) for use by the help desk.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) with 8+ years of relevant experience or Associates Degree (AS) with 10+ years relevant experience or High School/GED with 13+ years' relevant experience.
  • Experience designing, deploying, and maintaining SQL Server infrastructure on versions 2016 and newer.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience creating and managing SQL server infrastructure using PowerShell (preferred) or another automation technology.
  • Experience in MS SQL server database administration, design, and development.
  • Proficiency securing SQL server and databases, according to Defense Systems Information Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) guidelines.
  • Experience developing and maintaining scripting for automating SQL server tasks.
  • Active Top-Secret Clearance.
  • Willing to take a CI polygraph when required by the customer.
