About the position

The Senior Database Administrator will be responsible for managing and optimizing database systems, particularly in AWS environments. This role involves extensive experience with Oracle databases, database automation, and ensuring high availability and disaster recovery. The position requires strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders. This is a long-term contract position based in Atlanta, GA, with a hybrid work model.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for data analysis and database management, including database automation in AWS with RDS and Lambda using Python.
• Involved in maintenance, enhancement, and designing of data dictionaries and database models.
• Provides database support for business applications and schedules backup jobs for user databases.
• Manages access control and checks IP compliance for databases.
• Performs data purging and replication activities with both on-demand and automated cron jobs.
• Researches connectivity issues and recurring errors in application databases.
• Responds to database alerts and takes appropriate actions.
• Performs database creations and performance tuning.
• Provides technical assistance to users for application database maintenance.
• Ensures monitoring and alerts are properly in place to meet requirements.
• Performs application database and OS scripting.
• Reviews compliance reports and notifications for databases and internal processes.
• Conducts database recovery from logs, backups, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Involved in database updates/migrations and refresh activities.
• Monitors and reports on database instance and server activities, recommending resource utilization improvements.
• Implements database security and auditing features, conducting root cause analysis for incidents.
• Supports heterogeneous database interface deployment and functionality with applications.
• Plans and develops processes for database updates and migrations, including capacity planning and resource management.
• Conducts team training and manages resources effectively.
• Researches new technologies for operational reliability and compliance.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 10+ years as an Oracle DBA with expertise in design, implementation, backup, recovery, monitoring, and performance tuning.
• 5+ years of expertise with multiple AWS DB Services and Lambda creations for automating database jobs.
• 5+ years of experience in database automation in AWS with RDS and Lambda using Python, preferably with Oracle, Postgres, and AuroraDB.
• Expertise in high-availability database features, replication, disaster recovery, and live production schema changes.
• Proficiency with cloud-specific technologies (S3, Route 53, CloudFormation, AWS CDK, AWS Cloudwatch, AWS RDS, AWS Redshift, DynamoDB, Redis) and version control tools (Git).
• Knowledge of database security, backup retention policies, and scaling databases.
• Experience managing the full life cycle of database schema design and implementation, including script management from development through production releases.
• Experience implementing database schema changes in a live production environment with minimal downtime and zero performance impact.
• Strong communication skills for effective interaction with all levels of employees and management.
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
