About the position

The Senior Development Engineer, Solar/BESS is responsible for the preliminary design and technical scope development of early-stage utility-scale solar and energy storage projects. This role involves managing both internal and external resources to create optimized plant designs, cost estimates, and schedules, which are crucial for project development, PPA bidding, and acquisition diligence processes. The position requires collaboration with various internal departments and external stakeholders, ensuring that all technical and design aspects are effectively communicated and executed.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead and primary design contact for the Origination, Business Development, and Development teams.
  • Manage resources to prepare preliminary designs, performance estimates, cost estimates, schedules, and risk assessments for proposals.
  • Assess and communicate preliminary site constraints, cost adders, and schedule risks.
  • Provide optimized equipment selection including modules, inverters, and racking.
  • Manage acquisition diligence requirements and costs for new opportunities.
  • Represent Clearway Energy in meetings and negotiations with clients, project developers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities.
  • Support the competitive RFP EPC contracting process with design basis development and bid analysis.
  • Attend site walks to gather preliminary site assessment information for early-stage design documentation.
  • Provide technical support for internal business development programs and initiatives.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, or a related subject.
  • 5+ years of energy industry experience, including 2+ years of direct EPC experience in solar and/or energy storage projects.
  • Understanding of project design and optimization tradeoffs, market conditions, and equipment specifications.
  • Experience with standalone battery storage project design and integration with other generator facilities.
  • Familiarity with project financing and independent engineer requirements.
  • Knowledge of energy estimates, losses, and standards.
  • Experience in reviewing and negotiating engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for solar and/or energy storage facilities.
  • Ability to manage consultants and contractors effectively.
  • Working knowledge of relevant US and IEC equipment standards and construction practices.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated with strong organizational skills.
