About the position

The Senior Development Review Technician plays a crucial role in the Community Development Department of San Mateo, providing lead direction to technical and support staff while performing complex technical duties related to building permits and planning applications. This position is distinguished by its advanced level of responsibility, requiring specialized knowledge and the ability to work independently. The technician will ensure a quality-built environment and healthy neighborhoods through effective collaboration and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide lead direction to technical and support staff in development review duties.
  • Assist the public with inquiries regarding building and development review/permit requirements.
  • Accept and process building permit and development review applications, acting as lead on complex plan checks.
  • Evaluate staff activities and recommend improvements and modifications.
  • Provide and coordinate training for staff, addressing deficiencies as needed.
  • Compile building-related data and prepare various reports as directed.
  • Perform complex work related to building permit and development review applications.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.

Requirements

  • Two years of responsible journey level experience similar to Development Review Technician II or permit technician positions in other jurisdictions.
  • Equivalent to the completion of an Associate's degree in planning, architecture, construction technology, or a related field.
  • Possession of an International Code Council Permit Technician Certificate is highly desired and required within 12 months of employment.
