About the position

The Senior Director of External Affairs, Governmental Relations is responsible for overseeing the grassroots program of the California School Boards Association (CSBA). This role involves managing outreach efforts at state and local levels, coordinating membership training, supervising a team of grassroots professionals, and assisting with Political Action Committee fundraising. The position also entails promoting legislative priorities, developing reports, and fostering relationships with various stakeholders, including government agencies and community groups.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises a team of regionally based public affairs and community engagement representatives (PACERs) across California.
  • Executes CSBA's grassroots programs designed to identify and train local school and county board of education members for grassroots political action.
  • Fosters and supports legislative and political allies and facilitates interactions between state and federal legislators and candidates with school board members.
  • Coordinates grassroots efforts throughout California to maximize political effectiveness.
  • Oversees the association's grassroots program, educating school board members on advocacy work.
  • Identifies and implements successful grassroots motivation, activation, and management systems.
  • Supervises a team of grassroots professionals, including hiring, training, and supervising staff.
  • Develops strategic grassroots engagement activities to enhance advocacy programs on legislative and political issues.
  • Identifies opportunities within key legislative districts for local school board member engagement.
  • Collaborates with CSBA departments on communications, services, and marketing strategies.
  • Maintains key relationships with political and legislative insiders at state and federal levels.
  • Advises on strategies to forward the political and legislative priorities of the Association.
  • Plans winning campaign strategies to achieve CSBA's legislative agenda and priorities.
  • Assists with Political Action Committee fundraising and reporting activities.
  • Travels throughout California as needed.
  • Develops methods to communicate Association positions on proposed legislation effectively.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the Association's legislative strategy.
  • Writes background papers, letters, action alerts, and presentations for advocacy.
  • Contributes to Association publications and reports.
  • Represents and advocates for the Association on statewide and national campaigns.
  • Serves as a liaison to employees, the public, and various organizations regarding legislative and political issues.
  • Participates in developing and implementing grassroots and legislative action programs.
  • Communicates effectively with grassroots staff, colleagues, and the public in various settings.
  • Prepares and submits reports and correspondence regarding assigned program activities.
  • Participates in the development and administration of the department's annual budget.
  • Makes presentations to the Board of Directors and various committees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, public administration, government, legal, political sciences, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in campaign consulting, political fundraising, grassroots development, legislative representation, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of political and grassroots campaign development strategies.
  • Understanding of legislative practices and processes in education.
  • Familiarity with Political Action Committees and fundraising strategies.
  • Experience with non-profit organizations and regulatory codes relevant to the role.
  • Strong research, analysis, and reporting skills.
  • Effective communication skills for various settings.

  • Competitive salary range of $120,000 - $130,000 per year.
