About the position

As the Senior Director of Hardware Engineering at Symbotic, you will play a pivotal role in leading the development of our cutting-edge robotic technology platform. This position requires a deep-rooted expertise in robotics, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of automation, mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering contexts. You will be at the forefront of technological innovation, guiding a dynamic team dedicated to creating robust and scalable solutions that revolutionize industrial applications. Your leadership will ensure that our hardware engineering efforts align with the company's vision, driving forward our mission to transform the supply chain through advanced robotics and automation. In this role, you will provide hands-on technical leadership, diving deep into complex hardware challenges and offering innovative solutions. You will coach and mentor your team, fostering a culture of creativity and discipline while managing high-performing teams. Your responsibilities will include ensuring that our robotic solutions are mechanically and electrically sound, supported by meticulous design, rigorous testing, and iterative refinement. You will integrate an industrial perspective into our designs, focusing on critical aspects such as PLCs, motor systems, drives, and conveyance mechanisms, ensuring that our solutions thrive in real-world environments. Collaboration will be key in this position, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including software, design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and product management, to ensure seamless integration and functionality. You will also engage with stakeholders across the organization to align on project objectives and timelines, driving key performance indicators across the hardware engineering team. Continuous learning and staying updated with the latest trends in robotics and automation will be essential to deliver continuous improvement and value-add to our projects. This role may require up to 25% travel to client and customer locations, necessitating a valid driver's license and the ability to manage travel expenses personally.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and guidance on complex hardware challenges.

  • Ensure robotic solutions are mechanically and electrically sound through meticulous design and rigorous testing.
  • Integrate an industrial perspective into designs, focusing on PLCs, motor systems, drives, and conveyance mechanisms.
  • Foster collaboration between hardware and software teams for seamless integration.
  • Set the direction for the hardware engineering department, aligning with the company's vision and goals.
  • Engage with stakeholders to align on project objectives, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure integration and functionality.
  • Stay updated with trends and best practices in robotics and automation for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • 15+ years of experience in hardware engineering with a focus on automation, robotics, and/or automotive.
  • Proven experience in designing and scaling industrial automation and robotic solutions.
  • Hands-on expertise in mechanical, electrical, and industrial design, including industrial controllers and motor systems.
  • Strong understanding of design principles, product life management, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience leading distributed/multi-location teams and external design partners.
  • Deep understanding of robotics from both mechanical and software automation perspectives.
  • Familiarity with high-level and low-level software integration in robotic systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Exceptional analytical and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certifications or additional training in industrial systems, PLC programming, and conveyance systems.
