About the position

The Senior Director of Human Resources and People Operations at The University of Chicago is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing all HR functions within the Division of the Humanities. This position involves strategic direction, policy implementation, and fostering an inclusive work environment that aligns with the Division's mission. The Senior Director acts as a trusted advisor to leadership, focusing on talent management, employee relations, and diversity initiatives while managing a team of HR professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for all HR functions in the Division.
  • Partner with leadership to support people operations and human capital objectives.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive HR strategy for the Arts and Humanities departments.
  • Conduct division-wide assessments to identify performance gaps and implement improvements.
  • Administer HR staff and professional development budgets.
  • Lead and mentor a team of two HR professionals, ensuring high performance and engagement.
  • Set performance expectations and conduct regular evaluations for team members.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment through open communication and teamwork.
  • Oversee recruitment efforts, ensuring compliance with DEI standards.
  • Design and implement effective training programs for new hires and current employees.
  • Facilitate monthly all-staff meetings and oversee the annual HUM Staff Award Program.
  • Develop talent management plans to attract and retain top talent.
  • Conduct exit interviews and develop strategies to address issues raised.
  • Implement policies that promote a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Provide expertise in conflict resolution and employee relations.
  • Oversee performance management processes to support staff professional goals.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role, preferably in an academic or nonprofit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HR policies, employee relations, and talent management.
  • Experience in developing and implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively partner with leadership and staff.
  • Ability to analyze data and conduct assessments to inform HR strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor HR professionals.
