About the position

As the Senior Director of Operations at American Water, you will play a pivotal role in directing the development, management, and operation of the company's facilities and personnel engaged in various operational functional areas, including Distribution, Production, Collection, and Customer Field Service. This position is crucial for ensuring that the operations align with the company's strategic goals and regulatory requirements while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. You will be responsible for preparing and managing operations, maintenance, and state construction for network assets within established budgets, ensuring operational integrity across all areas of the business. In this role, you will serve as the primary point of contact for local regulatory, political, and community agencies, fostering strong relationships and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. You will direct the implementation of standards, targets, policies, and plans that enhance operational efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability. Your leadership will be essential in developing cost-effective solutions that meet customer expectations and technical requirements, while also encouraging best practices and innovation throughout all operational areas. You will implement effective reporting processes and provide analysis of information required for various reports, budgets, and business plans to state leaders. Additionally, you will support the coaching and development of employees, promoting idea generation within respective functional areas. Your role will also involve supporting local operational managers in developing relationships with local and state leaders and organizations, as well as addressing union labor issues by providing guidance and direction. A key aspect of your position will be to reinforce the importance of developing a diverse workforce and to support the Business Development function in operational analysis, pricing, and integration of water and wastewater business opportunities in both regulated and non-regulated markets. You will work collaboratively with other functional leads to mitigate business risks and implement effective communications at all levels of operations, contributing to a flexible and responsive business environment.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the development, management, and operation of facilities and personnel in Distribution, Production, Collection, and Customer Field Service.
  • Prepare and manage operations, maintenance, and state construction for network assets within established budgets.
  • Serve as the point of contact to local regulatory, political, and community agencies.
  • Direct the implementation of standards, targets, policies, and plans to ensure operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Ensure operational integrity in quality, environment, reliability, health, safety, and security.
  • Develop and direct cost-effective solutions to meet customer expectations and technical requirements.
  • Implement effective reporting processes and provide analysis for reports, budgets, and business plans.
  • Foster coaching and development of employees, promoting idea generation within functional areas.
  • Support local operational managers in developing relationships with local/state leaders and organizations.
  • Support local/area managers in union labor issues by providing guidance and direction.
  • Reinforce the importance of developing a diverse workforce.
  • Support the Business Development function in operational analysis and integration of business opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with other functional leads to mitigate business risks.
  • Implement effective communications at all levels of operations.
  • Provide effective leadership to enhance flexibility in changing business environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in operational discipline, management, or related technical discipline or equivalent.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Seven (7) to Ten (10) years managing operational areas and operating units, managing, meeting, and stretching performance targets.
  • Knowledge of the state regulated water business and regulations impacting the business.
  • Expert knowledge of process and operational areas.
