About the position

Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits (DFWS) is seeking a Senior Director of Sales for California Chains, a pivotal role responsible for executing national strategies and managing key retail partnerships within the state. This position is integral to driving the growth of DFWS's wine and spirits portfolio across prominent grocery chains and club businesses. The Senior Director will work closely with various stakeholders, including the VP of Strategic Accounts West, General Manager-West, and Regional Chain Managers, to penetrate key decision-makers at multiple levels within these priority chains. The role emphasizes the importance of account development through the execution of retailer endearment plans and category management strategies that aim to enhance profitable sales and market share growth for both DFWS and its strategic partners. The Senior Director will identify and act on opportunities to increase DFWS's share of the total wine category in California, developing collaborative plans with chains to achieve mutual market share growth. This includes implementing category management strategies that expand the DFWS portfolio and prioritizing business development opportunities. The role also involves managing and coaching Regional Chain Managers in Southern and Northern California, ensuring they effectively develop business performance within top chains. In addition to fostering strong customer relationships with key accounts, the Senior Director will ensure alignment between DFWS plans and customer strategies, maximizing the effectiveness of execution tactics. The position requires cross-functional collaboration to implement national retail strategies and influence program development that supports off-premise channel sales efforts. The Senior Director will also build relationships with the wholesaler network to enhance visibility of DFWS's portfolio with retailers and monitor retail trends to identify new selling ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and action opportunities to grow DFWS share of the total wine category across the California marketplace
  • Penetrate chains at multiple levels to develop collaborative plans to grow mutual market share faster than the remaining market
  • Develop and implement category management strategies and capabilities that expand the DFWS portfolio
  • Prioritize business development opportunities, identify levers for future growth, and develop a tactical plan to drive volume through increased distribution, improved promotion effectiveness, or other tactics
  • Ensure DFWS brands achieve programming goals including fair share or better of activity
  • Manage, develop and coach the Southern California and Northern California Regional Chain Managers responsible for the development and business performance in top chains within the market
  • Collaborate with Regional Manager roles and Chain DM roles in Northern and Southern CA on the excellent execution of chain specific plans developed to achieve compliance targets
  • Develop best in class customer relationships with key accounts
  • Ensure alignment of DFWS plans with key customer strategies, plans and goals
  • Ensure appropriate execution tactics are in place to maximize effectiveness of our plans and programs
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure implementation of national retail strategies
  • Influence program development to support off-premise channel sales efforts, and provide direction on retail/channel strategies to the Marketing department
  • Leverage the Customer Marketing role to develop unique programs that support attainment of our profit goals and improve our endearment to our strategic partners
  • Manage delivery of the entire Strategic Accounts plan in CA, including national customers
  • Build relationships with national and local wholesaler network to leverage relationships and ensure higher visibility of our portfolio with our retailers
  • Monitor the retail environment and be the expert on trends and developments as it relates to key accounts, future growth, and new selling ideas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 10-15 years calling on and developing strategy in the off-premise retail environment
  • Existing relationships at customer and distributor level highly preferred
  • Prior alcohol beverage experience is required
  • Proven experience leading and working with cross-functional teams
  • Strong track record managing and developing people
  • Must possess solid knowledge of Category Management with strong analytical skills
  • Excellent relationship development skills; proven ability to influence
  • Experienced manager; proven track record in ability to coach, lead and develop talent
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Driven and determined; passion for winning
  • Willingness to travel 50% of the time.
