The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Science Magazine is seeking a full-time Senior Editor specializing in biological sciences and biomedical fields. This role is pivotal in shaping the Perspectives section of Science magazine, which provides readers with accessible, engaging, and authoritative updates on significant scientific developments. The Senior Editor will be responsible for commissioning, handling, and editing Perspectives that accompany research papers, as well as creating substantial standalone pieces on emerging topics. These contributions are essential for enhancing the journal's content and ensuring it remains relevant and informative to its audience. In this position, the Senior Editor will be expected to publish a minimum of two Perspectives on papers per issue, totaling approximately 102 per year, alongside at least 0.5 standalone Perspectives per issue, culminating in around 128 Perspectives annually. The editor will ensure that all Perspectives adhere to established guidelines and best practices, particularly regarding the peer-review process for standalone pieces. Collaboration with the production and art teams is crucial to develop visually appealing display items that accompany the written content, while also providing excellent customer service to authors throughout the editorial process. Networking within the scientific community is a key aspect of this role, as the Senior Editor will be tasked with identifying potential topics and authors for standalone Perspectives through professional contacts and meetings. Additionally, the editor will contribute to various sections of the magazine, including Expert Voices, special issues, book reviews, and other journalistic endeavors, thereby playing a significant role in the overall editorial direction of Science magazine.
