About the position

The Senior Editorial Director, Social Sciences & Humanities leads a global team of Research Publishing staff responsible for developing and implementing journal and article growth activities for Wiley's society and proprietary journals. This leader takes primary responsibility for the growth and continued development of a strategically important subject area. They evaluate opportunities and challenges within their area of responsibility and translate them into a compelling direction that aligns with the overall portfolio strategy and company goals and objectives. The Senior Editorial Director continually communicates strategic objectives, balancing the short and long-term needs of the organization, and directs the priorities and resources of the team to deliver on Research Publishing targets and leverage business opportunities. In this role, the Senior Editorial Director views work in the context of external and internal customers and drives development initiatives that respond to stakeholder engagement and feedback. They possess in-depth knowledge of their area of responsibility and the inter-dependencies with other teams. This leader plays an instrumental role in embedding the Research Publishing Operating model and ensuring adherence to roles, responsibilities, and rules of engagement. They coordinate with other leaders to ensure teams are collaborating effectively and working toward shared goals. Regular reporting to leadership on the activities of the team is expected, providing evidence of the subject team's impact and delivery of strategic goals, while articulating programs and tactics to attract and retain authors and increase growth in their subject area. To succeed in this role, the Senior Editorial Director leverages their in-depth knowledge of the scholarly journal publishing industry and the competitive landscape, proven experience managing and influencing stakeholders across society and proprietary journals, demonstrable collaboration with editorial operations and marketing functions, and team leadership and development capabilities to enable their teams. They are tasked with developing the subject area to grow submissions and published output, enhancing the reputation and competitive position of the portfolio, and collaborating closely with marketing and business analysis colleagues to identify and map portfolio strengths and opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a global team of Research Publishing staff in developing and implementing journal and article growth activities.
  • Evaluate opportunities and challenges within the subject area and align them with overall portfolio strategy and company goals.
  • Communicate strategic objectives and balance short and long-term needs of the organization.
  • Direct team priorities and resources to deliver on Research Publishing targets.
  • Drive development initiatives that respond to stakeholder engagement and feedback.
  • Embed the Research Publishing Operating model and ensure adherence to roles and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate with other leaders to ensure effective collaboration towards shared goals.
  • Report regularly to leadership on team activities and impact on strategic goals.
  • Develop the subject area to grow submissions and published output.
  • Enhance the reputation and competitive position of the portfolio in the subject area.
  • Oversee the implementation of annual journal development planning cycles.
  • Establish a performance-based editorial culture with journal editors and staff.
  • Coordinate with marketing and content acquisition colleagues on strategic programs.
  • Build and nurture internal and external partner relationships.
  • Provide thought leadership and subject matter expertise in scholarly publishing and journal development.
  • Cultivate relationships with authors, external editors, and prospective partners.
  • Contribute as a member of the Publishing Development Management Team to meet shared goals.
  • Facilitate change and guide teams through periods of uncertainty.
  • Develop team members to meet current and future organizational requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required; PhD in related subject area preferred.
  • 10+ years of knowledge of other publishing houses.
  • Journal publishing experience with a track record for developing and growing journals.
  • Experience managing senior managers to get work done.
  • Skilled at persuading, influencing, and negotiating to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Ability to establish collaborative relationships within Wiley and external organizations.
  • Experience creating and delivering impactful presentations.
  • Exceptional communication and problem-solving abilities with creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to balance short- and long-term organizational needs and drive for results despite resource constraints.
  • Experience managing and leading teams, especially through times of change and uncertainty.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in open access publishing.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing trends and technologies.
  • Knowledge of data analytics in publishing.
