About the position

Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join a global engineering team responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This role is critical in ensuring that AWS data centers operate efficiently, providing continual access to the cloud services that customers rely on. The team is composed of diverse professionals including software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers, all working collaboratively to maintain the highest standards of safety and security while delivering exceptional capacity at the lowest possible cost. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will leverage your hands-on electrical design experience to create resilient and cost-effective electrical distribution systems. You will be responsible for taking designs from concept through to the permit and construction document set, defining critical equipment specifications, and approving equipment submittals. Your role will involve direct support for construction, from site selection review through to commissioning and turnover. You will work on multi-million dollar designs that support a variety of businesses and customers, driving continuous advancements and improvements in your designs. The position requires collaboration with internal teams and external partners, including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors. You will be expected to travel to various data center sites across the AMER region, with domestic travel up to 20% of your time, and some international travel may also be necessary. Responsibilities

  • Data center electrical designs and collaboration with other disciplines to create a construction document set.
  • Creation of designs which meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary constraints.
  • Work with local agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approval of equipment submittals.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during construction phases.
  • Work with commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, and startup as needed.
  • Offer creative, out-of-the-box solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 9+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
  • Willingness to think outside the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects, multiple significant upgrade projects, large scale technical operations, or large-scale compute farms.
