About the position

Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our global engineering team. This role is pivotal in the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring that our cloud services remain operational and efficient. As part of this team, you will be responsible for the electrical design of data centers, collaborating with a diverse group of engineers and specialists to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions that meet our customers' needs. You will engage in hands-on electrical design, focusing on critical equipment specifications and constructability of various designs. Your work will span from initial concept through to the permit and construction document set, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards. In this role, you will be tasked with creating resilient electrical distribution systems that support our data centers. You will justify and communicate technical decisions to senior management, driving continuous improvements in our designs. The position requires a collaborative approach, as you will work closely with internal teams and external partners, including utilities and contractors, to ensure successful project execution. You will also be involved in the commissioning process, validating the installation and performance of electrical systems, and providing technical support throughout the construction phases. This position is based in Dunn Loring, VA, with potential travel to data centers across the AMER region, requiring up to 20% domestic travel and some international travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for data centers and collaborate with other disciplines to create a comprehensive construction document set.
  • Create designs that meet or exceed quality requirements while adhering to budget constraints.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes by working with local agencies having jurisdiction.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals to ensure they meet project specifications.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects across different geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 9+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to find innovative solutions that reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects, significant upgrade projects, and large-scale technical operations.
