About the position

Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our global engineering team. This role is pivotal in the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring that our cloud services remain operational and efficient. As part of this team, you will be responsible for the electrical design of data centers, which includes the critical equipment needs and constructability of various designs. You will take designs from concept through to the permit and construction document set, defining critical equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. Your work will directly support construction efforts, from site selection reviews through commissioning and ultimately turnover to operations. In this role, you will design resilient and cost-effective electrical distribution systems, striving for world-class uptime for our customers. You will communicate technical decisions to senior management and drive continuous advancements in our designs. The position requires collaboration with a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, and operations managers, as well as external groups such as utilities and contractors. You will work on multi-million dollar designs that support a wide variety of customers and businesses, and your creativity and ingenuity will be encouraged and supported. The work environment at Amazon is fast-paced and exciting, with a strong emphasis on teamwork. You will be expected to work collaboratively with others to accomplish project goals. The position is based out of various locations including Herndon, VA, Austin, TX, Seattle, WA, or Columbus, OH, and will require travel to data centers across the AMER region, with domestic travel up to 20% and some international travel as needed. Responsibilities

  • Data center electrical designs and collaboration with other disciplines to create a construction document set.
  • Creation of designs which meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary constraints.
  • Work with local agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approval of equipment submittals.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for site reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 9+ years of experience developing design documentation for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to find innovative solutions that reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects and large-scale technical operations.
