About the position

Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our global engineering team. This role is pivotal in the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring that our cloud services remain operational and efficient. As part of this team, you will be responsible for the electrical design of data centers, collaborating with a diverse group of engineers, supply chain specialists, and operations managers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions that meet our customers' needs. You will engage in hands-on electrical design, focusing on the critical equipment necessary for data center operations, and will be involved in the entire process from concept through to construction documentation. In this position, you will take ownership of designs, ensuring they meet stringent quality and budgetary requirements. You will work closely with local agencies to ensure compliance with all relevant codes and regulations, and you will be responsible for reviewing and approving equipment submittals. Your role will also involve defining project scopes and providing technical support during the construction phases, as well as collaborating with commissioning teams to validate the performance of electrical systems. This position requires the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects across various geographical regions, necessitating travel to sites for reviews and engineering evaluations. Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for data centers and collaborate with other disciplines to create construction document sets.
  • Create designs that meet or exceed quality requirements while adhering to budget constraints.
  • Work with local agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 9+ years of experience developing design documentation for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to find innovative solutions that reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects and large-scale technical operations.
