About the position

Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our global engineering team. This role is critical as AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring that our cloud services remain operational and efficient. As part of this team, you will work on the most challenging problems, addressing thousands of variables that impact the supply chain. You will be responsible for taking designs from concept to the permit and construction document set, defining critical equipment specifications, and approving equipment submittals. Your role will involve direct support for construction, from site selection review through commissioning and turnover. Responsibilities

  • Design data center electrical systems and collaborate with other disciplines to create a comprehensive construction document set.
  • Create designs that meet or exceed quality requirements while adhering to budgetary constraints.
  • Work with local agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals to ensure they meet project specifications.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects across various geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, and startup support as needed.
  • Encourage creative and innovative solutions to engineering challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 9+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
  • Willingness to think outside the box to find creative solutions that reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects, significant upgrade projects, large-scale technical operations, or large-scale compute farms.
