About the position

Amazon Web Services Infrastructure Services is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our global engineering team. This role is pivotal in the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring that our cloud services remain operational and efficient. As part of this team, you will be responsible for the electrical design of data centers, collaborating with a diverse group of engineers, supply chain specialists, and operations managers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions that meet our customers' needs. In this position, you will leverage your hands-on electrical design experience to create resilient electrical distribution systems that support our data centers. You will take designs from concept through to the permit and construction document set, defining critical equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. Your role will involve direct support for construction, from site selection review through to commissioning and turnover, ensuring that all designs meet or exceed quality and budgetary requirements. Engineers at Amazon are expected to communicate technical decisions effectively to senior management and drive continuous improvements in our designs. You will work on multi-million dollar projects, tackling complex problems and providing innovative solutions that enhance our operational efficiency. The work environment is fast-paced and dynamic, offering opportunities for professional growth and continuous learning. Teamwork is essential, as you will collaborate with internal and external groups, including utilities, manufacturers, and contractors, to achieve our goals. This position is based out of Herndon, VA, Austin, TX, Seattle, WA, or Columbus, OH, with travel to data centers across the AMER region required, potentially up to 20% of your time. International travel may also be necessary, involving collaboration with global teams and the development of design document packages.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical systems for data centers and collaborate with other disciplines to create a comprehensive construction document set.
  • Create designs that meet or exceed quality requirements while adhering to budget constraints.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes by working with local agencies having jurisdiction.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals to ensure they meet project specifications.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects across various geographical regions.
  • Travel to sites for reviews and work with onsite field engineers, providing engineering evaluations, electrical systems audits, and startup support as needed.
  • Encourage creativity and offer innovative solutions to engineering challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of relevant electrical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
  • 9+ years of experience developing design documentation (plans, specifications, etc.) for construction and/or permitting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License and knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to find innovative solutions that reduce costs without impacting quality, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects, significant upgrade projects, and large-scale technical operations.
