Vanderweil Engineers is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Alexandria, VA office in a hybrid role. In this role, you will mentor and guide project teams in producing engineering solutions for large-scale and complex building projects. You will collaborate with other design team members, including architects, site/civil engineers, and mechanical engineers, to ensure that electrical systems align with the project's goals. Your responsibilities will include executing electrical designs according to the Electrical Department's Procedures and Standards, as well as specific client standards when applicable. You will need a strong understanding of electrical distribution equipment, workspace requirements, general power needs for various facilities, and emergency systems such as generators and lighting inverters. Additionally, you will prepare backup documentation to support design efforts, including load calculations, voltage drop calculations, and lighting power density assessments. Proficiency in modeling one-line diagrams in SKM and conducting short circuit analysis and coordination studies is essential. You will also create specifications for basic projects using CSI MasterFormat and on-drawing specifications, while maintaining a strong understanding of applicable codes and standards. This position requires a commitment to sustainability, and LEED accreditation is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Execute electrical designs in accordance with the Electrical Department's Procedures and Standards and specific client standards where applicable.
  • Understand electrical distribution equipment and workspace requirements; general power associated with office, laboratories, schools; lighting layout, circuitry, and lighting controls.
  • Prepare backup documentation to support design efforts including load calculations, voltage drop calculations, and lighting power density using ComCheckEZ.
  • Model a one-line diagram in SKM and execute a short circuit analysis and coordination study.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of applicable Codes and Standards.
  • Create specifications for basic projects utilizing CSI MasterFormat and on-drawing specifications.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience designing Electrical systems in commercial, academic, lab, mission critical, or healthcare facilities.
  • Experience leading teams required.
  • Business development and client-facing acumen a must-have skill.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of Revit / BIM is helpful.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Professional commitment to sustainability; LEED accreditation is a plus.
  • Professional Engineering license is preferred.
