About the position

The Senior Electrical Engineer PE, specializing in Protection & Controls at Kupper Engineering, is responsible for providing high-end engineering consulting design, construction, and maintenance services. This role involves conducting engineering site surveys, preparing schematics, troubleshooting substation issues, and leading quality improvement initiatives. The engineer will work collaboratively with clients and team members to deliver projects on time and within budget, while also mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering site surveys and analysis
  • Prepare protection & control schematics, wiring drawings, and relay philosophies for substation modifications
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve a variety of substation protection and controls issues
  • Perform feasibility studies and load studies
  • Utilize Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) for design purposes
  • Lead/support product design reviews and quality improvement initiatives
  • Read and interpret short circuit and protective device coordination studies
  • Design power distribution systems including medium voltage protective relaying and substation systems
  • Develop one-line diagrams, control schematics, and electrical & instrument diagrams (E&IDs)
  • Perform equipment selections, load calculations, and create specification documents
  • Assist in project management to ensure timely and budget-compliant project delivery
  • Coordinate project designs with clients, sales, and engineering teams
  • Attend job meetings and coordinate activities as required
  • Train and mentor entry and mid-level engineers

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with a focus on Power Systems or similar
  • Current, active PE license in Pennsylvania
  • 7+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with 3-5 years in relay/protection engineering or related disciplines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer knowledge and advanced skills in CAD, Microsoft Word, and Excel
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail

Nice-to-haves

  • Licensure in additional states
  • Programming knowledge or experience with protection relays and substation equipment
  • Experience with REVIT
