About the position

As an Employee Relations Specialist at Discover, you will play a crucial role in fostering a positive and productive work environment. Your primary responsibility will be to assist in the implementation of Employee Relations (ER) strategies, programs, and policies that promote healthy relationships between managers, employees, and co-workers. This involves proactively preventing and resolving interpersonal issues, ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and in compliance with company policies and government regulations. You will handle day-to-day ER matters while also educating relevant audiences to minimize legal risks and prevent unfair treatment of employees. In this role, you will intake and investigate formal employee complaints, providing recommendations for action. You will offer advice and counsel to employees to help them navigate issues with coworkers or management, including facilitating mediation when appropriate. Additionally, you will guide managers in addressing employee performance and conduct issues, reviewing and approving corrective actions, and making recommendations for terminations when necessary. Your expertise will also be called upon to advise on policy interpretation, basic employment law, and compliance situations, as well as handling workplace threat situations. You will consult with managers on reorganizations and position eliminations, evaluating legal risks and ensuring fair treatment of employees throughout these processes. Leading local ER projects and participating in cross-functional projects will be part of your responsibilities. You will also conduct exit interviews, provide ER-related training for managers, maintain ER records, produce ER reports, and manage complex leave of absence matters, accommodations, and return-to-work issues. This position is integral to maintaining a compliant and supportive workplace culture at Discover.

Responsibilities

  • Intakes and investigates formal employee complaints and recommends action.
  • Provides advice and counsel to employees to help them address issues with coworkers or management, including facilitation of mediation as appropriate.
  • Provides advice and guidance to managers in assigned business units to address employee performance and conduct issues, including guidance, review and approval of corrective actions & recommendations for termination.
  • Advises Managers and employees on issues related to policy interpretation, basic employment law and/or compliance situations and the handling of workplace threat situations.
  • Consults with Managers on reorganizations and position eliminations - evaluating and providing counsel on legal risk and mitigation, and to ensure fair treatment of employees.
  • Leads local ER projects and may work on cross functional projects.
  • Handles miscellaneous ER activities such as conducting exit interviews; conducting ER related training for managers; maintaining ER records and producing ER Reports; and handling the most complex LOA matters, accommodations and return to work issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Psychology, Business Administration and Management.
  • 4+ years of experience in employee relations, employment law, corrective action, employee complaints, or related experience.
  • In lieu of education experience, 8+ years of experience in employee relations, employment law, corrective action, employee complaints, or related experience.
