About the position

The Senior Employee Relations Consultant plays a crucial role in partnering with organizational leadership to deliver human resources programs and services that align with the organization's strategic objectives. This position acts as a management representative in labor relations, engaging with union representatives on various processes including grievances and disciplinary actions, while also mentoring other consultants and contributing to organizational effectiveness solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in negotiations as first chair and assists in the preparation of the Memoranda of Understanding.
  • Mentors Employee Relations Consultants, offering guidance on complex and escalated issues.
  • Acts as AHS management representative in contacts with union representatives on meet and confer processes, grievances, and other labor relations activities.
  • Contributes to informed decision making to identify trends and develop organizational effectiveness solutions.
  • Takes the lead on meet & confer processes as required.
  • Provides research and analysis of facts pertaining to employee organization demands, including cost or budget impact information.
  • Attends and participates in closed sessions with the AHS Board of Trustees regarding negotiations.
  • Functions as the HR Partner to management teams of assigned client groups, supporting their people-related objectives.
  • Develops and presents MOU training to Leadership, including changes to MOU after negotiations.
  • Consults with and provides advice to departmental management on employer-employee relations and Memoranda of Understanding.
  • Keeps abreast of labor/employee relations laws and trends affecting both private and public sectors.
  • Develops training for leaders in best employee relations practices and strategies for managing grievances.
  • Partners with management teams to support people-related objectives for employee performance and satisfaction.
  • Supports leadership in coaching/counseling and performance issues.
  • Identifies trends across business groups and recommends appropriate actions.
  • Conducts investigations including claims of sexual harassment, bullying, and discrimination.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Six years of experience in HR/Employee Labor Relations required.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience advising/educating managers on employee relations issues and HR laws specific to California.
