About the position

The Senior Engineer Automation & Controls (SCADA) position at American Water is a hybrid role based in Sacramento, CA, where the employee will work three days in the office or field and two days remotely. This role is crucial for implementing, maintaining, and supporting the automation and process control infrastructure, specifically SCADA systems. The engineer will provide expert assistance and collaborate with various teams to create engineering plans, designs, and monitor the build and commissioning of automation and process control systems. The position requires a deep understanding of new technological systems and the ability to apply multiple vendor products to develop innovative solutions that align with operational and business requirements. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Senior Engineer will assist in developing standards, practices, and policies related to the installation, maintenance, and operations of automation and process control systems. The role involves developing, deploying, and maintaining both standard and custom programming and configuration code for these systems. The engineer will also provide second-level support for maintaining the automation and process control infrastructure, which includes being on call and providing on-site support when necessary. Project management is a key aspect of this role, as the engineer will manage automation and process control system projects and perform quality assurance checks as required. The position also emphasizes collaboration with design engineers, operations personnel, and other internal staff to ensure successful project execution from conception to start-up, adhering to budget and schedule constraints. The engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving control system issues, investigating new technological developments, and advising operating company personnel on the proper operation and maintenance of process control equipment or systems. This role requires strong leadership skills, as the engineer will provide supervision and support for Controls Engineer or Controls Specialist staff members as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, maintain, and support the automation & process control infrastructure (SCADA).
  • Collaborate with design engineers, operations personnel, and other internal staff on project design, review, and commissioning/start-up.
  • Execute projects from conception to start-up within budget and project schedule.
  • Develop programming and configuration code for process control systems and make changes to existing programs.
  • Review control logic strategies and implement programming changes to optimize control strategies for treatment and pumping processes.
  • Perform or coordinate maintenance activities on process control equipment or SCADA systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues.
  • Investigate new technological developments and processes.
  • Advise and assist operating company personnel on proper operation and maintenance of Process Control equipment or Systems.
  • Ensure compliance with the Change Management process and enforce process control system life cycle practices.

Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, repair, and installation of Process Control Systems (SCADA and DCS).
  • Experience with configuration and programming of PLCs/RTUs (Allen - Bradley, Modicon, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Emerson) and HMIs (Iconics, Intellution, Wonderware or Ignition).
  • Strong knowledge of P&IDs, control elementary drawings, ISA instrument specifications, and loop diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of industrial control system platforms including PLC/DCS/HMI programming/design/configuration.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex process control problems related to water/wastewater systems.
  • Proficient with identifying, planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating detailed phases of Capital Projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data communications systems, protocols, wired and wireless network systems, and radio telemetry.
  • Knowledge of business applications, Microsoft Office products and productivity tools (eg MS Word, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to configure programmable process controllers PLCs/RTUs and HMI with various software.
