About the position

The Senior Engineer - Civil position with the City and County of San Francisco is a vital role that involves managing and directing the activities of professional and technical engineering personnel. This position is responsible for overseeing highly technical and administrative functions related to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of various projects and systems. The role requires a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the diverse population of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, contributing to the city's ongoing economic growth and urban development. Under general administrative direction, the Senior Engineer will direct, supervise, and coordinate the design of complex engineering projects. This includes conducting interviews, selecting, training, monitoring, and evaluating departmental staff and consultants. The position also involves planning, organizing, and directing the administration and management of contracts, as well as overseeing the preparation of complex construction contracts and documents. Establishing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and administrative directives is a key responsibility, along with managing projects and coordinating activities between various units and groups. The Senior Engineer will consult with technical staff, conduct meetings, and represent the City in various capacities. Writing, reviewing, and approving documents is also part of the job, as is supervising the review of shop drawings by contractors and field inspection staff. The role may require performing other related duties as assigned, making it essential for candidates to be adaptable and proactive in their approach to engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Direct, supervise, and coordinate the design of complex engineering, architecture, or landscape architecture projects.
  • Conduct interviews, select, train, monitor, and evaluate departmental staff and consultants.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the administration and management of contracts.
  • Oversee and review the preparation of complex construction contracts and documents.
  • Establish and implement departmental policies, procedures, and administrative directives.
  • Manage projects and coordinate activities between units and other groups.

Requirements

  • Seven (7) years verifiable professional engineering work experience, with four (4) years as a licensed professional engineer in the specialty being applied for.
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering.
  • Some engineering positions may require possession of a certificate issued by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or an equivalent certifying body.
  • Most positions require a valid California Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • A Master's Degree in Engineering may substitute for 1 year of work experience.
  • A PhD in Engineering may substitute for 2 years of work experience.
  • Additional special engineering licensing and/or work experience in areas such as Construction Management, Structural Design, Corrosion, Fire Protection, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental, or Instrumentation and Control Systems.
