About the position

The Senior Engineer - Design Transmission/Civil position at NV Energy involves providing comprehensive civil and structural engineering design services for substation and transmission facilities. The primary goal is to ensure that these facilities are constructed on schedule and within the allocated resources. This role requires a strong foundation in civil engineering principles, particularly in the context of utility settings, and involves a variety of responsibilities that include developing civil plans for sitework, conducting engineering analyses, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. In this role, the engineer will be responsible for creating substation and transmission line designs, which includes site development, grading, drainage, and the design of steel structures and foundations. The engineer will also be tasked with acquiring necessary construction approvals and permits, as well as providing mentoring and leadership to junior staff. The position requires independent scoping and routing of projects, evaluating alternatives to find the best value, and providing accurate cost estimates and schedule inputs for budgeting purposes. Additionally, the engineer will coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project success and will be expected to perform related duties as assigned. The work environment is primarily office-based, but may require travel to remote parts of Nevada for site assessments, which may involve walking over rugged terrain at high elevations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides civil engineering expertise to develop substation/civil plans for sitework including grading, off-site improvements, drainage facilities, fencing and block walls, and landscaping.
  • Completes calculations and prepares designs for substation steel structures, foundations, and control enclosures.
  • Conducts transmission line engineering analysis, route analysis and selection, and calculations for line design including structure loading and foundation design.
  • Specifies materials and evaluates bid documents and technical submittals, completing the construction package.
  • Acquires all necessary construction approvals and permits from the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Develops economical, technically feasible, reliable transmission and substation civil/structural designs with minimal supervision.
  • Independently scopes, routes, and sites substation and transmission line projects and evaluates alternatives.
  • Provides mentoring, leadership, training, and direction to fellow staff members, and conducts technical design and project peer reviews.
  • Provides accurate cost estimates and schedule input for company budgeting procedures.
  • Evaluates, benchmarks, and makes recommendations for the creation and improvements of substation and transmission standards and specifications.
  • Performs studies and prepares written and oral reports to management and internal and external customers.
  • Coordinates and interacts professionally with internal and external customers and stakeholders to ensure a successful project.
  • Ensures compliance with all policies, codes, and regulations applicable to the position and company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited school and 5 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, and must be a licensed PE. If no PE license then must have 8+ years as a practicing engineer.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of utility settings with specific experience in civil, structural, and/or transmission engineering design.
  • Civil experience of substation/switchyard site development or related design.
  • Structural experience involving substation steel design or transmission pole design for projects up to 230kV.
  • Transmission line design experience including overhead line design up to 230kV or underground line design up to 230kV.
  • Skills such as analytical, interpersonal, and communication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with hydrology and hydraulics software applications.
  • Familiarity with project management software.
