About the position

The Senior Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of microprocessor relay upgrade projects, ensuring reliable operations through continuous oversight. This role involves traveling to field locations to assist in troubleshooting during system outages and requires a strong understanding of NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards. The Senior Engineer will also engage in practical testing of relay upgrades and ensure compliance with security mandates during commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of microprocessor relay upgrade projects.
  • Travel to field locations to assist personnel in troubleshooting during system outages.
  • Conduct bench testing on new microprocessor-based relay upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC CIP Cyber Security Standards during commissioning of new relay systems.
  • Lead training initiatives for Engineers and Associate Engineers.
  • Develop operational and maintenance test instructions for relays.
  • Evaluate system disturbances and coordinate with Engineering to submit Engineering Service Requests.
  • Develop test plans for microprocessor relays.
  • Provide training for relay technicians.
  • Act as a technical liaison between Central Engineering and various groups.
  • Develop capital project justifications.
  • Review and comment on Engineering design concepts for relays and relay upgrades.
  • Deliver presentations, including at the executive level.
  • Engage with organizations such as EPRI and NATF regarding relay applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of experience in relay protection or substation system testing, or a Master's Degree in Engineering with a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of experience.
  • Proficient expertise in IEC 61850 protection schemes.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and VISIO.
  • Ability to learn and apply new topics effectively.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver exemplary customer service and foster a team-oriented work environment.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, and flexible to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound business decisions.
  • Knowledge of Protection Suite and/or various relay software.
  • Acute knowledge of NERC CIP Standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Engineering with a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of experience in relay protection or substation system testing.
