About the position

The Senior Engineer, R&D at Collins Aerospace is responsible for researching and developing new chemicals and application methods to enhance the performance and longevity of carbon/ceramic composite brakes used in commercial and military aircraft. This role involves managing multiple R&D projects, defining and implementing new initiatives, and collaborating with team members to solve complex problems in material science.

Responsibilities

  • Define, develop, and characterize new carbon materials and processes for high temperature aircraft brake components.
  • Manage multiple R&D projects and project task activities, including project planning, material processing, testing, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrate self-initiative and accountability for project tasks.
  • Propose and create new procedures as required.
  • Address complex problems with logical solutions and creativity.
  • Execute projects with limited oversight as a team member.
  • Support production investigations as needed.
  • Communicate and present technical information to senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree with a minimum of 3 years experience.
  • Experience in preparing solutions, compounds, and reagents for laboratory procedures.
  • Experience in conducting tests on materials to ensure performance and quality standards are met.
  • Experience in writing technical reports detailing methods and findings.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering focusing on Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composites.
  • Experience in manufacturing and characterizing fiber-reinforced carbon/carbon and ceramic matrix composite materials.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Engineering experience in high temperature material characterization and processing.
  • Knowledge of advanced material characterization tools such as SEM/EDS, X-Ray Diffraction, and Raman Spectroscopy.
