About the position

As a Senior Engineer - Structural Mechanics/Dynamics in the Mechanics and Design Organization at GE Renewable Energy, you will engage in cutting-edge research and development in the fields of structural mechanics and structural dynamics. Your primary focus will be to develop and implement innovative mechanical design solutions applicable to a diverse range of engineering challenges. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our mechanical components and systems are designed to meet rigorous performance standards while also being cost-effective and manufacturable. In this position, you will lead the structural design, analysis, and testing of mechanical components and systems, utilizing a variety of materials including metals, composites, and advanced multi-material structures. You will be responsible for project planning and execution, guiding projects from system-level architecture through to detailed design and manufacturing. Your expertise will be crucial in defining requirements and executing design and analysis tasks using both proprietary and commercial finite element analysis (FEA) solvers. You will also participate in experimental validation of analytical results, collaborating with various support functions and external suppliers to ensure project deliverables are met. Your role will involve preparing and delivering presentations, reports, and publications to engineering staff, GE businesses, and external agencies. You will provide technical expertise to resolve challenges across the organization and participate in technology road mapping and competitive assessments to develop new technology programs. Additionally, you will mentor and guide team members, fostering a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment that encourages innovation and technical growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural design, analysis, and testing of mechanical components and systems with a wide variety of material compositions.
  • Carry out project planning and execution from system-level architecture through detailed design and manufacturing.
  • Define requirements and execute design and analysis tasks using proprietary and commercial FEA solvers.
  • Participate in the definition and execution of experiments to validate analytical results.
  • Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables.
  • Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews, delivering presentations, reports, and publications.
  • Provide expertise to resolve technical challenges across the organization.
  • Participate in technology road mapping and competitive assessment to devise new technology programs.
  • Work with internal and external collaborators in developing new project proposals and initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics with a strong background in structural design and analysis and a minimum of 7 years of industrial experience, or MS degree with a minimum of 10 years of industrial experience.
  • Strong technical skills in solid mechanics and finite element methods.
  • Extensive experience and high proficiency with commercial FEA packages such as Ansys.
  • Extensive experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques, and material processing selections for mechanical components and systems.
  • Experience in vibration-dynamics analysis and testing.
  • Experience in conceptual design, build up and validation of full-scale mechanical systems.
  • Strong analytical skills and execution mindset with a sense of urgency.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills in a global team environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with structural optimization and commercial codes such as OptiStruct.
  • Experience with impact and progressive damage simulations.
  • Significant experience with parametric, feature-based geometric modeling, and hands-on experience with commercial CAD packages.
  • Experience in analysis, fabrication, and testing of composite structures.
  • Experience with design and optimization for additive manufacturing.
