There are currently two (2) vacancies in this position with the Utilities Engineering section of Public Works. Future vacancies may be filled in this section and others using the eligibility list for this position classification.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff, consultants, and interns performing engineering planning, design, and construction work of public works and utilities projects and systems.
  • Trains staff in work procedures; evaluates employee performance, counsels employees, and effectively recommends initial disciplinary action; assists in selection and promotion.
  • Participates in the development of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for assigned services and programs; recommends and implements policies and procedures including standard operating procedures for assigned operations.
  • Monitors activities of the work unit; identifies opportunities for improving service delivery and procedures.
  • Coordinates assigned services and operations with other divisions and outside agencies.
  • Participates in project budget preparation; identifies resource needs; prepares detailed cost estimates with appropriate justifications; monitors expenditures.
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates and responds to complaints and inquiries from citizens, other departments, and agencies; recommends corrective actions to resolve issues.
  • Supervises and gives technical advice, guidance, and direction to an engineering team.
  • Reviews and designs project plans and specifications involving hydrology, traffic and soils reports and calculations, as well as grading plans, sewer plans, water and wastewater facility plans, streets plans, traffic studies, building demolition plans, and other documents.
  • Plans, coordinates, and reviews project work performed by private consultants.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil or structural engineering, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional civil or structural engineering experience, including one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • A Professional Engineering certification is highly desired.

  • During their initial probationary period, they shall accrue Annual Leave as Probationary Sick Leave.
  • There are 13 (10-hour) paid holidays (130 hours) per calendar year.
  • Eligible employees may 'buy back' a maximum of 160 hours of Annual Leave once each year.
  • The City currently offers eight HMO plans and two PPO medical plans to choose from.
  • The City provides a Medical Allowance to Members to be used for the purpose of purchasing mandatory health coverage.
  • Dental insurance premiums are paid by the employee.
  • Vision insurance premiums are paid by the employee.
  • Short-term and long term disability insurance is provided free to each employee.
  • The City provides a term life insurance policy to each employee equal to 5 ½ times the employee's annual basic earnings.
  • Employees can make voluntary salary deferrals to a Nationwide plan.
  • After 5 years of service: $1,400.00 annually.
  • Tuition reimbursement up to a lifetime maximum amount of $10,000 per employee.
  • Bilingual Pay Program for those demonstrating the ability to communicate in a language other than English.
  • Certification Pay available upon proof of position related certifications.
  • Uniform allowance for members required to wear uniforms.
