About the position

As a Senior Engineering Manager in DoorDash's Core Data Platform organization, you will be responsible for the most critical long-term technical roadmap of the organization. This role is pivotal in guiding engineers and management leadership on the right technical choices, mentoring several senior engineers, and maintaining a high bar of technical competency. You will actively participate in build vs buy strategies and collaborate with leading Data Vendors and solution providers in the industry. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, Data Platform, you will be part of our Data organization in Engineering. In this position, you will drive the vision and strategy for building the Core Data Platform charter, ensuring it can handle the challenges of a rapidly growing business. Your expertise in building and operating high-scale systems will be crucial, with a focus on reliability and quality of analyzed data. You will lead a successful team through coaching, mentoring, and providing technical and career guidance, while also building, sustaining, and growing a diverse team to meet the organization's growing needs. You will be responsible for building data-intensive solutions used by DoorDash engineers, data scientists, analysts, and business users across the company. Your role will involve thinking in terms of building data products rather than just systems, excelling at driving the engineering vision, strategy, and execution for an organization consisting of multiple teams and sub-teams. As a technology leader, you will mentor and guide a fast-growing organization in setting the right architectural patterns, making judicious investments, and anticipating future company needs. You will also focus on continuous improvement of data architecture and development processes, fostering cross-collaboration with stakeholders, external partners, and peer data leaders. Your hands-on approach will involve getting down to the lowest level of detail while fostering a positive and supportive work culture.

Responsibilities

  • Drive vision & strategy for building the Core Data Platform charter.
  • Lead a successful team via coaching, mentoring, and providing technical and career guidance.
  • Build, sustain, and grow a diverse team to address the growing needs of the organization.
  • Build data-intensive solutions used by DoorDash engineers, data scientists, analysts, and business users.
  • Drive and deliver the ongoing product vision of data products.
  • Set the right architectural patterns and handle build vs buy decisions.
  • Work with various vendors in the data solutions space.
  • Plan for long-term strategy and engineering excellence while achieving quick wins.
  • Strive for continuous improvement of data architecture and development processes.
  • Foster cross-collaboration with stakeholders, external partners, and peer data leaders.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or PhD. in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of industry experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in an engineering management role.
  • Extensive experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems in large scale data intensive applications.
  • Experience with large scale data systems such as data processing, complex/high volume real-time insights, data quality and reliability frameworks.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Apache Spark, Airflow, Trino, Pinot, Flink, Kafka, Snowflake, Databricks, Iceberg, or Delta Lake.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with machine learning infrastructure and workflow.
  • Familiarity with experimentation platforms and knowledge graphs.
