About the position

The Senior Engineering Manager at Canonical will lead the engineering team responsible for delivering essential components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, and toolchains. This role is pivotal in driving Ubuntu's development, requiring a deep understanding of Linux and exceptional leadership skills to inspire and grow a distributed team of engineers. The position involves strategic planning, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and fostering a healthy engineering culture while working in a globally remote environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of distributed engineers
• Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership
• Be responsible for planning, estimation, and execution
• Work with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu
• Collaborate with cross-functional leadership teams
• Drive the advancement and adoption of the latest software development practices
• Design, embrace, and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices
• Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
• Engage with other teams at Canonical to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps
• Work from home while meeting in person for company sprints.

Requirements

• Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g. deb, rpm)
• Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
• High quality software engineering knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go toolchains, ARM and/or RISC-V
• Engagement with open source communities and processes
